Reviewing articles for a journal is widely accepted as a professional responsibility and a method of serving the greater intellectual community. However, rarely are doctoral students and junior scholars formally or adequately prepared for the act of reviewing manuscripts. Instead, we are expected to learn the process by trial and error and to do so without feedback. In this session, Drs. Stephenson and Upadhyay share the results of their work gathering insights from seasoned reviewers and journal editors on the peer-review process. From the perspective of the editors, the session will reveal what makes a good reviewer, what are the challenges editors face in working with reviewers, things reviewers do that frustrate editors, and ways that reviewers can make an editor’s job easier. From the voice of the seasoned reviewers, the session will uncover strategies for successfully executing a review in an efficient manner, practices to avoid, and considerations for crafting the review.
